THE BENEFITS OF STUDY GROUP
Hello dear friends, I must appreciate you for all your
encouraging messages; I really do appreciate you for taking out time to read
through the materials we publish on this blog. Beginning from next week, I am
going to commence a new series of seminar that will be of paramount importance
to you.
"Alone we can do so little; together we can do so
much".- Helen Keller
I will be
giving you a brief general introduction to different Study Skills, thereafter,
focus on one of the most important and less-used
study skills known to man – STUDY
GROUP. During the seminar period, several easy-to-implement strategies

LEARNING IS NOT AUTOMATIC--IT’S A PROCESS
Written By CHIMA I. AZU M.PD
Most people think that learning comes automatically from reading books or listening to lectures/lessons. Actually, learning is a science
based on definite principles. Learning is a mental process in which your
eyes (reading) and your ears (listening) play a passive part.
Please don’t get me wrong; the message I am trying to pass
across is that, your eyes and ears only convey
information received from an outer source, they do not store the information. So
the information is lost if something active is not done to store it. To store
it, we must pay attention, understand, repeat and digest the new information
gained.
Just one warning: Never attempt short-cuts. Leave short-cuts
for fools who do not know that short-cuts are the quickest way to trouble. With
planning and discipline, you are guaranteed not only success in examinations
but also success and happiness in life.
LAUGHTER INCREASES YOUR BRAIN PERFORMANCE
You have heard that laughter is the best medicine, and that holds true for the brain as well as the body. Unlike emotional responses, which are limited to specific areas of the brain, laughter involves multiple regions across the whole brain.
Furthermore,
listening to jokes and working out punch lines activates areas of the brain
vital to learning and creativity. As psychologist Daniel Goleman notes in his
book Emotional Intelligence,
“Laughter…seems to help people think more broadly and associate more freely.”
Looking
for ways to bring more laughter in your life? Start with these basics:
§ LAUGH AT YOURSELF. Share
your embarrassing moments. The best way to take ourselves less seriously is
talk about times when we took ourselves too seriously.
§ WHEN YOU HEAR LAUGHTER, MOVE TOWARD IT. Most of
the time, people are very happy to share something funny because it gives them
an opportunity to laugh again and feed off the humour you find in it. When you
hear laughter, seek it out and ask, “What’s funny?”
§ SPEND TIME WITH FUN, PLAYFUL PEOPLE. These
are people who laugh easily–both at themselves and at life’s absurdities–and
who routinely find the humour in everyday events. Their playful point of view
and laughter are contagious.
§ SURROUND YOURSELF WITH REMINDERS TO LIGHTEN
UP. Keep
a toy on your desk or in your car. Put up a funny poster in your office. Choose
a computer screensaver that makes you laugh. Frame photos of you and your
family or friends having fun.
§ PAY ATTENTION TO CHILDREN AND EMULATE THEM. They
are the experts on playing, taking life lightly, and laughing.
Halo Sonya, many thanks for your kind words. I sincerely apologize for this very late reply.
